Jason Hunter

Jason’s love for golf started on an unexpected day off school at age seven — a day that changed everything. With a mum devoted to the game, he got his first taste of golf swinging plastic balls in the backyard and sneaking onto the sports field at Campbells Bay Primary with his grandmother’s clubs. From that moment, he knew he’d found his calling. He finally joined Pupuke Golf Club at 12 and never looked back.

As a coach, Jason loves working with beginners and club golfers. He still remembers the thrill of his first centred strike and gets pure joy seeing his students experience that same buzz. Whether it’s helping someone get their first handicap or guiding them towards single figures, Jason’s goal is to open the door to a lifetime of golf — whether social or competitive.

Jason’s experience in the golf industry spans more than 20 years. Before turning pro, he worked as a golf course superintendent and in golf course construction, including projects like Clearwater Resort and Glendhu Golf Course. He turned professional in 2005, starting his traineeship at Russell Golf Course in Christchurch, then moving on to roles as the club professional at Remuera Golf Course and later head professional at North Shore Golf Club in Auckland.

Outside of golf, Jason enjoys spending time with family, daily swimming (including ocean swims and endurance events), and playing golf with mates. He’s also passionate about golf course architecture, with favourites like Alister MacKenzie and Tom Doak topping his list.
