About PGA Professional Larissa Blackbourn
It didn’t take Larissa Blackbourn long to see her hard work pay off after picking up golf at the age of 8 at Aviation Golf Club in Auckland. Just two years later, Larissa was selected to play for Auckland then represented New Zealand in the Commonwealth Trophy, Queen Sirikit Cup and trans-Tasman events.
Highlights of Larissa's amateur career were winning the NZ Amateur championship at 14 and finishing 5th at the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego in 2007.
Larissa briefly attended Arizona State University on a scholarship before returning home to pursue a career in coaching, starting her apprenticeship in 2015 at Mount Maunganui Golf Club, then completing it and graduating while at Omanu/Golf 360 in 2017.
Larissa’s coaching philosophy centres on the belief that a good golf swing starts from a good setup, and good fundamentals. She also believes a long-term approach to learning and change is the key to true improvement.
When it comes to club fitting, Larissa believes that using clubs suited to the individual is a pivotal factor for being able to swing the club most effectively. Larissa uses a process to understand what the client is experiencing; find out what they hope to achieve out of upgrading or changing their equipment; assessing their equipment to see what can be changed to achieve the result; then testing the equipment to see what will give the best outcome.
Larissa specialises in beginner women's coaching pathways and short game – which from when she first started playing, she has found to be a lot more creative and interesting. This has now transferred into her coaching.
Larissa gets satisfaction from seeing people enjoy the game, and her main goals when coaching are to firstly get more people in to the sport, and secondly, to help people improve and enjoy the game more, regardless of their skill level.
