Push Trundler vs Electric Trundler, Which One Is Right for You?

May 24, 2026Scott Pickett

One of the most common questions golfers ask when upgrading their gear is:

Should I buy a push trundler or an electric trundler?

And honestly, there’s no perfect answer for everyone.

A lot comes down to:

  • how often you play
  • your budget
  • your fitness
  • the type of courses you walk
  • how much convenience matters to you

Having used both regularly myself, I can genuinely see the pros and cons of each.

Push Trundlers Still Make a Lot of Sense

I still really like using a good push trundler.

At the moment, I regularly use a Clicgear Model 4, and it’s an excellent setup.

What I like about push trundlers:

  • Simple and reliable
  • Great storage compartments
  • Easy place for rangefinders and accessories
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Very little maintenance
  • No batteries or charging

There’s also something nice about the simplicity of them.

You can:

  • fold them up
  • throw them in the car
  • leave them there
  • pull them out next round

No charging. No remotes. No extra setup.

Electric Trundlers Make Walking Golf Easier

Lately though, I’ve been using an MGI All Terrain electric trundler quite a bit more.

And I have to admit, I really enjoy it.

Mine is a remote-control model, which means:

  • my hands are free
  • I’m not physically pushing anything
  • I’m basically steering it around the course ahead of me

Once you get used to it, it feels incredibly easy.

That said, the first few rounds with a remote trundler can feel slightly unusual while you get used to:

  • the speed
  • steering
  • how far ahead to walk
  • positioning on hills and slopes

After a while though, it becomes very natural.

I Definitely Notice Less Fatigue

One thing I’ve personally noticed with electric trundlers is reduced fatigue by the end of the round.

Especially on:

  • hilly courses
  • hot days
  • 36-hole days
  • longer winter rounds

Walking still feels enjoyable, but without constantly pushing weight around the course.

And I honestly think some golfers play better late in rounds when they’re less physically tired.

That’s probably underestimated.

Electric Trundlers Let You Carry More Gear

Another practical advantage is storage and weight.

When using an electric trundler, I find myself carrying:

  • more rainwear
  • extra drinks
  • more food
  • additional golf balls
  • accessories
  • extra layers

Simply because you’re not worried about pushing the extra weight yourself.

That can make winter golf and long rounds much more comfortable.

Why Many Golfers Never Go Back

I think this is the biggest thing.

A lot of golfers who move to electric trundlers genuinely don’t want to go back afterwards.

Once you get used to:

  • less effort
  • less fatigue
  • remote control convenience
  • easier walking

…it can be hard returning to pushing manually again.

Personally, I’d say electric trundlers are probably my preference now overall.

The Downsides of Electric Trundlers

At the same time, electric trundlers do come with a bit more admin.

That’s important to mention honestly.

Things you need to think about:

  • Charging batteries
  • Charging remotes
  • Cleaning carefully
  • Looking after electronics
  • Storing lithium batteries properly

Unlike a standard push trundler, you can’t just flood an electric trundler with water while cleaning it.

You do need to take a little more care.

There’s also the added responsibility of lithium batteries, which many golfers are more aware of nowadays regarding charging safety and fire risk.

And practically speaking:
you can’t just leave the battery permanently sitting in the car and forget about it.

Push Trundlers Still Have Some Advantages

Despite all the benefits of electric models, push trundlers still win in a few areas:

  • Lower cost
  • Simplicity
  • Less maintenance
  • Lighter transport weight
  • Faster setup
  • No charging worries

Some golfers also simply enjoy the physical aspect of pushing while walking the course.

Which One Is Better?

Honestly, neither is universally “better.”

It depends on the golfer.

Push Trundlers May Suit You If:

  • You want simplicity
  • You play casually
  • You prefer lower cost
  • You don’t want charging/admin
  • You enjoy the exercise

Electric Trundlers May Suit You If:

  • You walk regularly
  • You play often
  • You want less fatigue
  • You play hilly courses
  • You have back, shoulder, or mobility issues
  • You enjoy convenience and technology

My Thoughts as a PGA Professional

Personally, I can happily use both.

But if I’m being realistic, I probably now prefer using an electric trundler overall because of how easy it makes walking golf feel.

At the same time, I completely understand why many golfers still love the simplicity of a push trundler.

There’s no right or wrong answer.

The good news is both options are far better than carrying a heavy golf bag for most golfers.
