Te Arai Links as a whole is one of the best golf destinations you can experience in New Zealand.
Having been up there a few times now, my personal preference is the South Course. It offers an incredible balance of playability, scenery, and overall experience that’s hard to match.
On my most recent trip, I was playing with a group of six guys who hadn’t been there before, which made it even more enjoyable. Watching their reactions as the round unfolded was a good reminder of just how special the place is.
Arrive Early and Enjoy the Full Experience
One thing I’d highly recommend is getting there well before your tee time.
We arrived about two and a half hours early, and it made a big difference to the day.
We started with breakfast at Ric’s, which is right there on site. From there, we spent time on the putting green, having a few challenges and getting a feel for the speed of the greens. Some of the putts out there are nearly impossible, which adds to the fun.
After that, we moved through the range and chipping areas. By the time we stepped onto the first tee, we felt completely ready to play — and had already taken in a big part of what makes the place special.
The First Ocean View
The course builds nicely, but from about the fourth hole onwards, it really comes into its own.
That’s when you get your first proper glimpse of the ocean.
From there, the views just keep coming. On a good day like we had, with a light ocean breeze and the sound of the sea in the background, it’s hard to beat.
It’s one of those courses where you find yourself looking around just as much as you’re thinking about your next shot.
A True Walking Experience
Te Arai South is very much a walking course, and I think that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable.
You’re not rushing around in a cart. You’ve got time to take everything in — the views, the layout, and the feel of the course.
It adds to the overall experience and makes the round feel a bit more relaxed, even though you’re still fully engaged in your golf.
Course Conditions and Attention to Detail
What stood out on this trip was the condition of the course.
We’d had a significant amount of rain the night before, but you wouldn’t have known it. There was barely even a damp patch out there.
The greenkeeping team clearly take a lot of pride in what they do, and even just interacting with them during the round, they were friendly and welcoming.
That level of attention to detail really shows.
Playing the Course
From a playing perspective, the South Course is a really enjoyable test.
It’s not overly demanding off the tee, which makes it playable for a wide range of golfers.
But it definitely challenges you as you get closer to the greens.
While the greens might not be quite as dramatic as the North Course, they still require good touch and control. You need to think your way around and be precise with your approach shots.
It’s a course that rewards good decision-making rather than just power.
Hard to Pick a Favourite Hole
It’s actually difficult to pick a standout hole.
The experience builds as you go, particularly once the ocean comes into play, and it’s more about the overall flow of the round than one individual moment.
That’s often a sign of a really well-designed golf course.
The Perfect Finish
After the round, we headed back to Ric’s again, sat down for a drink, and debriefed on the day.
That’s another part of the experience that stands out — it’s not just about the golf. It’s about the whole day.
From arriving early, to playing the course, to relaxing afterwards, it all ties together.
Final Thoughts
Te Arai South is more than just a golf course — it’s a full golf experience.
Between the layout, the setting, the facilities, and the overall atmosphere, it’s right up there with the best in New Zealand.
If you get the chance to play it, take your time, enjoy the day, and make the most of everything the facility has to offer.
