A range of different golf balls

What Golf Ball Should I Use?

March 6, 2026Scott Pickett

Walk into any golf shop and the golf ball section can be a little overwhelming.

There are dozens of options, all claiming to go further, spin more, or feel softer. One of the most common questions golfers ask is:

“What golf ball should I actually be playing?”

The reality is that different golf balls are designed for different types of players. Over the years I’ve played plenty of Pro-Ams, club competitions and social rounds with golfers of all levels, and I often notice that many players simply use whatever ball happens to be in their bag.

Choosing the right ball can actually make a noticeable difference to your game.

If You Want Maximum Distance

If distance is your main priority, there are a couple of balls that stand out.

Two very popular options are the Callaway Diablo and the Titleist Velocity.

Both of these balls are designed to help golfers generate:

  • strong ball speed

  • a powerful launch

  • reduced spin off the driver

That combination can help produce longer and straighter drives, which is exactly what many golfers are looking for.

If You Want More Spin and Control

For golfers looking for maximum spin and stopping power, a high-performance ball is usually the way to go.

One of the best known examples is the Titleist Pro V1x.

This ball is designed to:

  • fly slightly higher

  • generate more spin on approach shots

  • provide excellent stopping power on the greens

Many better players prefer this style of ball because it gives them more control into the greens.

If You Prefer a Soft Feel

Some golfers prioritise feel, particularly around the greens and when putting.

If you like a softer feel off the clubface, two balls worth trying are:

The Callaway Supersoft is actually rumoured to be one of the most popular golf balls in the world, which tells you how many golfers enjoy that softer feel.

These balls are often a great option for golfers with moderate swing speeds who want an easy-launching ball with a softer response.

Consistency Is More Important Than You Think

One of the biggest improvements golfers can make is simply playing the same ball consistently.

Switching between different golf balls every round can make it harder to judge:

  • distance control

  • spin around the greens

  • feel on the putter

Once you find a ball that suits your game, sticking with it can make a noticeable difference.

Finding the Right Ball for Your Game

Every golfer is slightly different, so sometimes the best approach is to experiment with a few options and see what performs best for you.
