What Happens During a Driver Fitting? (And Is It Worth It?)

May 14, 2026Scott Pickett

For many golfers, driver fitting sounds a little intimidating.

There’s often this idea that fittings are only for elite players or golfers with perfect swings.

That’s definitely not the case.

A good driver fitting should actually feel:

  • relaxed
  • educational
  • enjoyable
  • and genuinely helpful

At Golf 360, we want golfers walking away feeling like they learned something about their game, whether they buy a club or not.

Buying a new driver should be exciting and fun.

In many cases, golfers are surprised by how much modern driver technology has improved. You can browse our full range of golf drivers here.

Do You Need to Be a Good Golfer for a Driver Fitting?

Definitely not.

Golfers don’t need to be low handicappers or elite ball strikers.

They simply need to be able to hit enough shots for us to see a pattern.

In fact, driver fittings often help mid to higher handicap golfers the most because they usually gain the biggest improvements in:

  • forgiveness
  • consistency
  • launch
  • confidence

We’re not looking for perfection.
We’re looking for something that helps your golf game become more reliable.

What Happens First?

One of the first things we ask golfers to do is bring in their current driver.

That gives us a really useful starting point.

We’ll normally chat about:

  • your current game
  • what your bad miss is
  • what you like or dislike about your current driver
  • your ball flight tendencies
  • what you’re hoping to improve

Ideally, it’s also helpful if golfers have warmed up a little before the fitting starts.

How Long Does a Driver Fitting Take?

Most driver fittings take around 45 minutes, although some can run closer to an hour depending on the golfer and how many combinations we test.

One thing people often don’t realise is how tiring fittings can actually be.

Many golfers don’t hit lots of balls regularly, so fatigue can become a factor.

When golfers get tired:

  • swing speed drops
  • timing changes
  • bad shots become more frequent

If needed, we’ll often invite golfers to come back another time rather than forcing a decision while they’re exhausted.

What Technology Is Used During a Driver Fitting?

At Golf 360, we use Foresight Sports GCQuad launch monitor technology.

This gives us the information we need to properly understand what the golf ball and club are doing through impact.

For driver fittings, some of the main things we look at include:

  • launch angle
  • spin rate
  • carry distance
  • total distance
  • dispersion
  • angle of descent
  • strike consistency

The goal isn’t to overload golfers with technical numbers.

The data simply helps confirm what we’re seeing and helps guide us toward combinations that perform better.

What Are You Actually Trying to Improve?

For most golfers, the goal isn’t necessarily to hit the ball 30 metres further.

Usually, it’s about:

  • more consistency
  • tighter dispersion
  • better forgiveness
  • improved confidence
  • more playable misses

Of course, extra distance is always nice if we can achieve it.

But realistically, if someone is only gaining two metres, that’s probably not enough to justify changing drivers.

We want the fitting to genuinely feel worthwhile for the golfer.

Why Shaft Selection Matters So Much

One of the biggest surprises for many golfers is how important the shaft can be.

The shaft plays a huge role in helping golfers time the swing correctly.

That’s why we’ll often talk about:

  • whether golfers prefer heavier or lighter feel
  • what feels natural during the swing
  • whether they like smoother or firmer feel
  • athletic background and movement patterns

Sometimes I’ll even relate it to sports like:

  • cricket
  • tennis

Golfers are often used to certain weights and timing patterns from other sports equipment like cricket bats or tennis racquets.

The right shaft can completely change how a driver feels and performs.

Golfers Are Often Surprised by the Results

One of the interesting parts of driver fitting is that golfers sometimes end up performing best with a driver they weren’t expecting.

It might:

  • not be the model they originally wanted
  • not be the most expensive option
  • not be the brand they walked in expecting to buy

That’s why we often prefer golfers not to focus too heavily on branding or pricing during the fitting process.

In many cases, we simply hand golfers different combinations and let the results speak for themselves.

The clubs should do the talking.

One driver that has been incredibly popular for us recently is the Ping G440 Max Driver. For many golfers, especially those wanting more forgiveness and consistency, it’s been a very impressive option during fittings.

Is There Pressure to Buy?

No.

At Golf 360, we don’t charge for driver fittings unless golfers specifically want to take the fitting information elsewhere to purchase clubs.

The goal is not to pressure golfers into buying something.

Ideally, the improvement becomes obvious enough that the decision feels natural and easy.

Sometimes golfers discover their current driver is actually quite suitable.
Other times, the gains are significant.

Either way, the fitting should feel valuable and informative.

Why Driver Fittings Improve Confidence

One of the biggest benefits of a fitting is confidence.

Golfers often leave feeling:

  • clearer about their equipment
  • more confident in their setup
  • more trusting of their ball flight
  • more optimistic about their game

And confidence with driver in hand can completely change how golfers approach the course.

Final Thoughts

A good driver fitting should never feel intimidating.

It should feel:

  • educational
  • enjoyable
  • collaborative
  • and genuinely useful

The goal is simply to help golfers find something that:

  • suits their swing
  • improves consistency
  • builds confidence
  • and makes the game more enjoyable

Sometimes the gains are dramatic.
Sometimes they’re more subtle.

But when golfers find a driver setup that genuinely suits them, the game often becomes much easier.
