Golf is already a difficult game.
There are so many moving parts:
- Swing technique
- Timing
- Short game
- Course management
- Mental side
- Distance control
That’s why I think golfers sometimes underestimate just how hard the game actually is when they first start.
And while equipment can’t magically fix everything, having the right gear can absolutely make golf easier and more enjoyable.
As a PGA Professional, I see this every week.
The Driver Is Probably the Biggest Game Changer
If I had to pick one club where the right equipment can make the biggest difference, it’s probably the golf driver.
When a driver is genuinely fitted well for someone:
- They hit more fairways
- Their confidence improves
- They stop playing recovery golf
- They enjoy the game more
Getting off the tee well changes everything.
Golf becomes much easier when you’re playing your second shot from the fairway instead of constantly trying to recover from trees, rough, or hazards.
Modern drivers are also far more forgiving than older models.
Things like:
- Shaft fit
- Loft
- Head design
- Weighting
- Launch and spin
…all play a huge role.
Many Golfers Are Using Equipment That Doesn’t Suit Them
One thing I see regularly is golfers simply using golf clubs that aren’t right for them.
A lot of people get started with:
- Hand-me-down clubs
- Old sets from friends or family
- Random second-hand gear
- Clubs bought online without advice
Sometimes they’ve never actually been told whether the clubs suit them or not.
It’s not unusual for someone to finally get fitted and realise:
- Their shaft is far too stiff
- Their irons are too difficult to hit
- Their driver loft is wrong
- Their clubs are too short or too long
And often, they’ve been making golf harder than it needs to be for years.
Forgiveness Matters More Than Ego
This is a big one.
A lot of golfers buy clubs based on what they think they should play rather than what actually helps them play better.
Some golfers:
- Use blades that are too unforgiving
- Use low-loft drivers they can’t launch
- Play shafts that are too stiff
- Carry long irons they struggle to hit
Modern forgiving equipment exists for a reason.
There’s no shame in using clubs that help you:
- Launch the ball higher
- Hit straighter shots
- Maintain distance on mishits
- Enjoy the game more
In fact, most golfers would probably score better if they swallowed their ego slightly and used more forgiving gear.
Modern Equipment Has Helped Older Golfers Stay in the Game
This is one of the really positive changes in golf equipment.
Modern technology has helped many older golfers continue enjoying golf for longer.
Things like:
- Lightweight shafts
- More forgiving drivers
- Easier-launching hybrids
- Electric trundlers
- Softer golf balls
…have genuinely made the game more accessible.
You can see many golfers still playing enjoyable golf well into their later years because modern equipment helps offset some loss of speed and mobility.

What Equipment Can’t Fix
At the same time, equipment does have limits.
No driver can fix:
- Extremely poor swing technique
- Bad decision making
- Lack of practice
- Poor tempo
- Unrealistic expectations
Sometimes golfers hope a new club will completely solve their game overnight.
Golf unfortunately doesn’t work like that.
The right equipment helps support better golf, but technique and practice still matter enormously.
Wedges and Putters Matter More Than Golfers Think
Drivers get most of the attention, but wedges and putters are incredibly important too.
The wrong wedge setup can create:
- Distance gaps
- Poor turf interaction
- Difficult bunker play
And putters are highly personal.
Sometimes changing:
- Head style
- Length
- Weight
- Alignment features
…can dramatically improve confidence on the greens.

Club Fitting Makes More Sense Than Ever
Modern fitting technology has made it much easier to match golfers with equipment that genuinely suits them.
Launch monitors now allow golfers to better understand:
- Spin rates
- Launch angle
- Ball speed
- Shaft performance
- Dispersion patterns
In many cases, golfers are surprised how much easier the game becomes when equipment finally matches their swing properly.

My Thoughts as a PGA Professional
Personally, I think the right equipment absolutely makes golf easier.
Not because it performs miracles, but because it removes unnecessary difficulty from an already difficult game.
Golf is hard enough without:
- Fighting the wrong shaft
- Using clubs that are too difficult to hit
- Playing with poor gapping
- Using gear that doesn’t suit your swing
The right equipment won’t replace good technique and practice.
But the wrong equipment can definitely hold golfers back more than they realise.
FAQs
Does custom fitting really make a difference?
For many golfers, yes. Even small changes in shaft, loft, lie angle, or head design can improve consistency and confidence.
What club makes the biggest difference when fitted properly?
For most golfers, the driver is often the biggest game changer because it influences confidence and positioning off the tee.
Are forgiving clubs better for most golfers?
Generally, yes. Most everyday golfers benefit from equipment that provides more forgiveness on mishits.
Can new clubs fix a bad golf swing?
No. Equipment can help, but it can’t replace sound fundamentals and practice.
Happy golfing
