Every golfer was a beginner once, and the right ball makes those early rounds a lot more fun. If you're new to the game or playing off a higher handicap, you want a golf ball that's soft, forgiving and easy to get airborne, one that flies straight, feels great off the putter and doesn't cost the earth when a few disappear into the bush.

That's what this range is all about. These are mostly low-compression, two-piece balls built for easy distance and a straighter flight at moderate swing speeds, including favourites like the Callaway Supersoft, Bridgestone Extra Soft, Titleist TruFeel and Velocity, and Wilson DUO Soft.

Which ball should a beginner or high handicapper choose?

Look for soft feel and forgiveness first. Distance comes as your swing develops, and a soft, straight-flying ball helps keep it in play in the meantime. Value matters too, so several of these come in money-saving multi-packs, and it's worth checking hot golf ball deals before you buy a dozen at full price.

As your ball-striking sharpens and you start wanting more control around the greens, step up to our balls for mid handicappers, and eventually the low handicap range. Compare everything in our full golf balls collection, or see women's golf balls.
