If you play golf regularly in New Zealand, chances are you’ve had a few rounds where your gear has ended up soaked. Wet towels, damp gloves, water inside pockets, and valuables wrapped in whatever dry corner you can find.
That’s one of the big reasons waterproof golf bags have become so popular over the past few years.
But are they actually worth the extra money?
As someone who sees a lot of golf gear come through Golf 360, I’d say the answer depends on how often you play, the conditions you play in, and how much convenience matters to you.
What Is a Waterproof Golf Bag?
A waterproof golf bag is designed to help keep your gear dry during wet weather rounds.
Most waterproof bags feature:
- Waterproof or highly water-resistant materials
- Sealed or protected zips
- Water-resistant pockets
- Extra rain protection around valuables sections
- Matching rain hoods
It’s worth noting that “water-resistant” and “waterproof” are not always the same thing. Some bags handle light showers well, while others are built to cope with full winter golf conditions.
The Biggest Advantages of Waterproof Golf Bags
Your Gear Stays Dry
This is the obvious one, but it makes a big difference.
Keeping spare gloves, towels, clothing, scorecards, rangefinders, and valuables dry can make a wet round much more enjoyable.
A lot of golfers don’t realise how annoying damp gear becomes until they switch to a waterproof bag.
Great for Winter Golf
If you play through winter, a waterproof bag starts making a lot more sense.
New Zealand golf courses can get pretty wet during the colder months, especially if you’re walking regularly or playing early morning rounds.
A waterproof bag helps remove some of the hassle.
Ideal for Trundler Users
Golfers using push trundlers or electric trundlers often get the most benefit from waterproof bags because the bag is exposed to the weather for the entire round.
If you use an electric trundler regularly, a waterproof cart bag can be an excellent setup.

The Downsides of Waterproof Golf Bags
Like anything in golf, there are trade-offs.
They Usually Cost More
Waterproof bags are generally more expensive than standard bags due to the materials and construction involved.
For some golfers, especially casual players, the extra cost may not feel necessary.
Some Materials Feel Stiffer
Certain waterproof fabrics can feel slightly firmer or less flexible than traditional golf bags.
Most golfers get used to this quickly, but it’s worth mentioning.
Waterproof Doesn’t Mean Indestructible
Over time:
- Zips can wear
- Seals can weaken
- Heavy exposure to rain eventually takes its toll
A waterproof bag still needs reasonable care if you want it to last well.
Who Should Definitely Consider a Waterproof Golf Bag?
I think waterproof bags are well worth considering if you:
- Play year-round
- Walk most of your golf
- Use a trundler regularly
- Play in winter conditions often
- Carry electronics or valuables
- Travel to golf regularly
- Like keeping your gear organised and protected
For serious regular golfers, they make a lot of sense.
Who Probably Doesn’t Need One?
You may not need a waterproof bag if you:
- Mainly play summer golf
- Rarely play in bad weather
- Mostly ride in carts
- Are trying to keep costs down
- Only play occasionally
A good quality standard golf bag may suit you perfectly.
Waterproof Stand Bag vs Waterproof Cart Bag
This often comes down to how you play golf.
Waterproof Stand Bags
Great for:
- Golfers who carry
- Walking golfers
- Versatility
- Lighter overall setup
Waterproof Cart Bags
Great for:
- Maximum storage
- Electric trundler users
- Organisation
- Extra pocket space

My Thoughts as a PGA Professional
Personally, I think waterproof golf bags are worth it for a lot of New Zealand golfers, especially if you play regularly through winter.
Once golfers get used to keeping their gear dry, organised, and protected, it’s often hard to go back.
That said, not every golfer needs one. If you mainly play fair-weather golf during summer, a standard golf bag could still be the smarter value option.
Like most golf equipment, it comes down to matching the gear to how often and where you play.
Final Thoughts
A waterproof golf bag won’t magically improve your golf, but it can definitely improve your overall experience on the course, especially during winter and wet conditions.
For regular golfers who play in all weather, they’re one of those purchases that often ends up feeling worthwhile over time.
